Aigana Gali

Aigana Gali (b. Kazakhstan) is a multi-disciplinary artist, born on the ancient crossing of the Great Silk Road in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to a Georgian mother and Kazakhstani father. Graduating from Kazakh Leading Academy of Art and Architecture in 2005, before pursuing postgraduate studies in Art History and Art Business, she now lives and works in London, UK.

Gali’s works are united by their exploration into Kazakhstan’s physical, cosmological and mythological landscapes. Formerly trained as a dancer, Gali’s work could not be made without the rhythm, gestures and energy of her own body. In her series Steppe, the artist layers pigments and washes through large sweeping movements to capture the vastness of the Eurasian steppe and the metamorphoses of colour within its skies. Her works return to the symbols of her ancestors and the cosmology of the Tengri. Yet, paintings such as the Tengri Light Works series explore a new visual language that ultimately feels timeless. Composing geometric compositions from a central point on the canvas, the abstract shapes and corporeal forms radiate outwards like a beam of light. Throughout her works, Gali captures states of seemingly unending transformation.

Aigana Gali has participated in multiple group shows, such as the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition (London, 2021), Blue Minds Festival (London, 2021), and Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery’s Light Works (London, 2021), as well as a solo exhibition at the Georgian National Museum of Fine Art (Tbilisi, 2016). Gali has also been showcased at the Start Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery (London, 2019), and has been specially commissioned to produce works for the St Regis Hotel (Astana).
